‘Stephen B. Steward: ‘With My Whole Heart’

Singer and songwriter Stephen B. Steward remembers meeting gospel great Andrae Crouch back in 2004 at a music conference. “They had a big tent with around 3,000 people,” Stephen said. “He was walking around, just saying hello to people, and I just walked up to him and told him that I was a student of his music. We just ended up talking for about two hours.”

From this first meeting came music. “Andrae and I had been friends for several years,” Stephen said. “I had taken him a Christmas present, some Wings cologne, over to his house. When I walked in he was sitting at his grand piano and I said, ‘What are you playing, man?’ He said he didn’t know.” Stephen felt Andrae’s music was beautiful so he was instantly inspired to write lyrics. That’s how the song “With My Whole Heart” was written.

Later, “Andrae Crouch is on the phone,” is what Stephen’s excited wife Onesha said to her hubby. Andrae and Stephen discussed songwriting, with Stephen adding lyrics to Andrae’s music. They’ve written seven songs to date.

But as for Stephen’s partnership with Onesha, a friend that went to Stephen’s sister’s church introduced the couple. “I met her and the rest is history,” Stephen said. He and Onesha have two children, Stephen Jr., 25, and Erica, 21. Andrae Crouch always calls Stephen a “prolific writer.”

Once Andrae told Stephen, “You’re not musically trained.” Stephen was ready: He shot back, “Neither are you!” LOL.
